Disney’s Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser Hotel Closes Early: What Went Wrong?

Share

In an unsurprising turn of events, Disney has announced the closure of its highly-anticipated Star Wars-themed Galactic Starcruiser hotel after less than two years of operation. The ambitious project aimed to provide guests with an immersive, interactive role-playing adventure but failed to meet expectations despite its hefty price tag. Starting in March 2022 near the Disney World Resort in Orlando, the starship’s final voyage is now scheduled for September.

The Galactic Starcruiser hotel, known for its unique windowless, theme-park experience concept, required a mandatory 48-hour stay and cost a staggering $6,000 for a family of four. Each person paid around $1,200 per day for the all-inclusive adventure, including themed games, food, drink, and opportunities to interact with beloved characters from the Star Wars saga. However, this once-in-a-lifetime experience will soon fade away as the starship will be decommissioned and sent to the scrapyards of Corellia.

Despite the hotel’s early closure, Disney emphasized its pride in the project, describing it as one of their most creative endeavors. “Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser is one of our most creative projects ever and has been praised by our guests and recognized for setting a new bar for innovation and immersive entertainment,” stated Disney in a released statement. “This premium, boutique experience gave us the opportunity to try new things on a smaller scale of 100 rooms, and as we prepare for its final voyage, we will take what we’ve learned to create future experiences that can reach more of our guests and fans.”

Indeed, Star Wars enthusiasts who had the chance to visit the Galactic Starcruiser hotel generally spoke highly of the concept. The hotel received an average rating of 4.5 stars on Tripadvisor, with visitors praising the immersive experience and the chance to engage in role-playing within the Star Wars universe. One reviewer wrote, “If you are into Star Wars, and you enjoy role-playing, this is absolutely worth it.” Guests also appreciated the inclusive package, which covered lodging, food, park admission with lightning lane access to rides, and the unforgettable character interactions provided by the dedicated crew members.

However, it is worth noting that the hotel received a relatively low number of reviews, with only 43 to date. Among the few negative experiences shared, some guests expressed disappointment in the limited thematic spaces and the feeling of being confined. One dissatisfied visitor likened the experience to being in jail, while another called it “the most expensive rip-off” of their life. Some guests also lamented the hotel’s small size, noting that it lacked the immersive atmosphere they had anticipated.

It is speculated that the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic may have played a significant role in the hotel’s struggles. Concerns about enclosed spaces and prolonged confinement likely deterred potential visitors, impacting the hotel’s overall appeal.

Despite its premature closure, the Galactic Starcruiser hotel will be remembered as a dream destination for Star Wars enthusiasts and avid role-players with financial means and a high tolerance for enclosed spaces.
