SUPER (8) Bowl!

Share

I used to watch the Super Bowl for the commercials. These days, not even those thirty-second glimpses into what awaits during summer are enough to get me excited. And let’s face it, even if there were any ad campaigns of interest, they have a habit of finding their way online before the game even airs. So, unless you somehow like bands like Black Eyed Peas, there’s just really no point anymore.

Sometimes, though, someone does something right. Someone like Paramount and someone like JJ Abrams. Not only did they use the big game as an opportunity to officially kick off the hype for their mysterious SUPER 8, but they did it the way it’s supposed to be done. No advance footage leaking online. No idea about the kind of film we are in for. And just enough footage to whet our appetites and make us crave more.

More after the jump…

The best part of this is the fact that we’re in 1979 and in full-blown Spielberg territory. Ya know, when I first heard a then-unknown Michael Giacchino’s score for The Lost World video game, I was blown away. I remember thinking – this guy should be the next John Williams. I remember saying to people that his game score was more inspired, more Williamsy than than ol’ Johnny’s actual Lost World score!

It’s so awesome that here, 14 years later, Giacchino is involved with a different kind of “Super” than his Incredibles, and is clearly once again being inspired by the former master* (ed. note: see comments). This 30 seconds of score has me the most psyched of all about this thing. If this is where Steven is putting his Transformers share than he can go ahead and back as many as those god awful films as he wants. But it’s still far from a shure thing for me — I’ve been 50-50 on Abrams career-wise, but I have a feeling Super 8 is going to tip the scale.

The LA Times has he first official synopsis of the film:

The Paramount Pictures release is set in Ohio in 1979 and introduces a troupe of six youngsters who are using a Super 8 camera to make their own zombie movie. One fateful night, their project takes them to a lonely stretch of rural railroad tracks and, as the camera rolls, calamity strikes — a truck collides with an oncoming locomotive and a hellacious derailment fills the night with screaming metal and raining fire. Then something emerges from the wreckage, something decidedly inhuman.

Super 8 opens in IMAX June 10.
