My Favorite Two Of The Year Out Today!
GO. In IMAX. I have no idea what I saw last night. But I know my jaw was open the entire time. I shall go back tonight and attempt to keep my mind from exploding. Also, if you even dream of seeing this non-IMAX i’m not sure there’s a point to your existence.
ALSO – very important DO NOT MISS “THE FALL” this weekend. Seriously. If you like movies from guys like Guillermo del Toro or the early works of Terry Gilliam, you’re just really, really dumb for not seeking this out on the big screen. Stop reading EG and go catch The Fall.

Fine, you still exist – you’re only half faded a la Mark McClure. The Chinese is maybe the one exception I could make, but still – if i lived there, i would have been at the Bridge IMAX last night at midnight and then following up with Chinese today for the 2nd viewing. No way would i ever do non-imax for first time, why deny yourself that extra awe? Especially on a trip of this magnitude!

At least when human performers have their spirits broken they have VH-1 reality shows to console them.
We just returned, and I won’t speak for the other but I thought it was exactly what I expected it to be: Visually noisy and nonsensical child drek. Why is a movie called SPEED RACER about the stock market? IMAX or not, there’s no way this film works.
HOWEVER, my biggest laugh came during the credits when I learned that one of the characters was played by Korean pop star sensation, RAIN! RAINNNNNNN!! Oh I miss you Colbert.
Can’t wait to see more mindless noise in JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH in 3-D!!!
There is far too much to say about Speed Racer which would amount, like the movie, to too little. But here are some bullet points. It’s great eye candy. It’s over-complicated. It has its charms. It’s awful. It’s fun, then almost immediately, it’s not. It’s trick bubble gum that makes you smile and then spikes go through your tongue. My eyes got so tired I fell asleep for a minute, but then I was okay for the rest of it. It’s long. It’s not really about racing. It’s confusing. It’s mean to me. I wanted to badly to like it. I really don’t know what it was about or what happened in it.
well i hope you’ll still see THE FALL and not hold Speed against me. I personally could not have had a better experience. for me, the happy time that film gave me is the reason for my existence!!
I’ll definitely see THE FALL… but on DVD. It looks too Pan’s Labyrinth-y to me, and I know I’m not going to like it.
THE FALL is more Baron M. than anything else. Which is why i loved it so much!!! New Baron special edish out on dvd and blu-ray, btw. awesome.
Speed’s low take at the b.o. this weekend is BAD for movies as a whole. A film this unique tanking translates to studios having yet another excuse to prevent directors from doin their own thing and stop them in the future from attempting to create something new, fresh, unique, crazy / something we have never seen before. I rank SR up there with movies like THE LAST STARFIGHTER, TRON and even TOY STORY. A new kind of trip we’ve never taken. I mean, even potentially boring scenes like one of two villains plotting boring dialogue becomes something i’d watch 10 times more than Tony Stark talking to (take pick of any one else in that film). I loved it even more the second time. It’s not even a movie to me. It’s an adrenaline jolt of disbelief of what i am seeing and hearing. I guess you it’s just one of those films where, if you don’t click in, you hate it. Keep in mind i never saw one episode of the show, either. So it’s not like i’m this giant SR fan. I just really have fun watching this slaughter of visual chaos. It’s like a 2 hour and 15 minute tunnel sequence from the original Wonka. I never wanted to stop the boat.
As for plot complications, who cares? Usually people complain there is not enough plot in a movie mainly for kids. I love how this film never panders to its demographic. If the kids cant keep up, fag em up the hole, i say. Not liking this film for plot issues is just a ridiculous as jason castro not enjoying his high because he can’t grasp the complexities of the effects of tetrahydrocannabinol on the nerve cells in his brain. Human wipes, trippy color patterns, a racing cast of human sebulbas, crazy villians, zoetrope zebra effects, trixie, racer x, young speed meeting trixie with soft focus background hearts…countless amazing moments for me in this. and John Goodman. Who knew? He gives it the heart it needs to win me over and prevents this from becoming Sky Captain.
Best of all, Giacchino’s score. Remember, eros, when we saw Super Mario Bros and we talked about how they should have integrated the theme? That’s exactly what the giachhino has done here and i love him for it. Die hard aside, this is my favorite Joel Silver produced film since Xanadu.
Which, i guess pretty much sums this all up perfectly.
Yeah, Speed Racer’s bombing, and I’m really not surprised. I hear you on adult plot, and I was able to follow along fine, but I wanted to be able to see the cars battling more clearly. I love the “sword & shield” tire gag, and the bee hive launcher and all that stuff… but it’s little moments surrounded by spinning, camera-whipping, cars playing pinball with one another, and it felt like Transformers where I didn’t know what the fuck was going on during a race. I don’t even understand how Speed won at the end, and why didn’t he just… uh.. speed past them? Why did he have to ricochet into them and spin around a zillion times, and jump in the air, and all that stupid shit? Ugh.
What it really boils down to is that I don’t know the animated cartoon well, so I don’t know if it was faithful or not. And if it was, I guess I don’t like Speed Racer, and if it wasn’t, then I wish they were more faithful to the source so I could realize if I like it or not.
Either way, I’m glad it reinvigorated you, but wow about Silver. The Matrix is still by far my favorite post-Die Hard Silver, and Wachowski Bro/Sis movie.
