The Wilhelm Scream

Share

A series of screams performed by an actor were recorded in 1951 for โ€œDistant Drums,โ€ a Warner Bros film. They were used for a scene where a man is bitten by an alligator. The recording was stored in the studioโ€™s sound effects library, and has since been used in many of their films. Sound Designer Ben Burtt (Star Wars) tracked down the scream recording โ€“ which he named โ€œWilhelmโ€ from a character who made the same scream in the 1953 film, โ€œCharge at Feather River.โ€ Ben Burtt has since placed the sound effect into almost all of his filmsโ€ฆ
