– The Visions series, known for its unique Japanese animation style and non-canon Star Wars universe storytelling, has been highly acclaimed by critics, with strong ratings on both Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic.
Former Sith Lord character, Ronin, who made his first appearance in the initial season of the animated Star Wars anthology Star Wars: Visions, was merely expected to make a brief appearance. However, he will be making a comeback in the third season of the Lucasfilm series, premiering on Disney+ on Oct. 29 this year.
The Star Wars Celebration event in Tokyo held a special panel dedicated to the highly successful show where Visions executive producer James Waugh confirmed the return of three favored storylines from the show’s inaugural season. “The Duel”, “The Village Bride”, and “The Ninth Jedi” will continue in the forthcoming third batch of episodes.
Waugh highlighted the fresh, adventurous direction of Visions, announcing the introduction of the Star Wars: Visions Presents banner. This initiative provides the opportunity for filmmakers to develop deeper, lengthier narratives, breaking free from the constraints posed by the typically shorter Visions episodes. The first project will be a standalone series from “The Ninth Jedi”, scheduled for release sometime in 2026.
Designs for new characters were revealed by Takanobu Mizuno from anime studio Kamikaze Douga, who will direct “The Duel: Payback”. Sequels for “The Village Bride” and “The Ninth Jedi”, titled “The Lost Ones” and “Child of Hope” respectively, will be directed by Hitoshi Haga of Kinema Citrus and Naoyoshi Shiotani of Production IG.
Ronin, from the episode “The Duel”, has won over numerous Star Wars fans globally, prompting the creation of statues, and even a Hasbro Black Series figure.
In the panel, Masaki Tachibana of anime studio Kinema Citrus introduced a kawaii addition to the Star Wars universe in his installment, “Yuko’s Treasure.” This episode will feature a young girl protagonist, accompanying a bear-like droid with a microwave fitted in his torso. This character was warmly received by the anticipatory crowd at the convention.
Hiroyasu Kobayashi of Project Studio Q shared insights into his darker and more mechanical world in his installment “The Song of Four Wings”. He focused heavily on designs and featured numerous droids and mechs.
Waugh emphasized the original inspirations behind the anthology in his comments, stating the show stemmed from a fondness for the animated medium and particularly admired the craftmanship involved in storytelling through animation.
Visions premiered in 2021 as a collection of non-canon animated shorts produced by various Japanese animation studios, in a variety of animation styles. This creative freedom resulted in unrestricted, highly imaginative interpretations of the Star Wars mythos, winning over both fans and critics.
The first volume of Visions was launched on Disney+ in September 2021, featuring 9 episodes comprising work from various Japanese animation studios. This volume was met with near-universal critical acclaim, boasting a 98 percent critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and 81 percent on Metacritic.
Visions’ second volume was released on Disney+ in May 2023, presenting episodes from a variety of international studios. Volume two also received massive appreciation from the critics, obtaining a perfect 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes and 88 percent on Metacritic.
