Attention Slayer fans, get ready to sharpen your stakes! Hulu is reportedly close to ordering a pilot for a sequel series to the beloved supernatural drama Buffy the Vampire Slayer, starring original lead Sarah Michelle Gellar. According to Variety, Gellar is in talks to reprise her iconic role in the new series.

The proposed sequel will center around a new Slayer, staying true to the show’s mythology that a new Slayer is chosen every generation to battle vampires, demons, and other supernatural foes. Gellar is expected to have a recurring role in the series, allowing the spotlight to shine on the new Slayer.

The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer followed the story of Buffy Summers, a chosen Slayer tasked with defending the world from various otherworldly threats. The series, created by Joss Whedon, drew inspiration from the 1992 film but established its own unique continuity. It has been praised as one of the standout TV series from the late 90s and early 00s, helping to popularize serialized storytelling in television.

If the new series moves forward, it will be helmed by showrunners and writers Nora and Lila Zuckerman, with acclaimed director Chloé Zhao set to direct and executive produce through her company Book of Shadows. Gellar will also serve as an executive producer along with original Buffy producers Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, and Kaz Kuzui, as well as Dolly Parton.

Notably absent from the project is Joss Whedon, the creator of Buffy, who has faced allegations of mistreatment from former cast members and crew. Following controversy surrounding his behavior on Buffy and Angel, as well as his tenure on Justice League and other projects, Whedon will not be involved in the sequel series.
