After being exclusively signed to Marvel for several years, Slott will now be writing the monthly comic Superman Unlimited for DC. The series will be part of a company-wide initiative called the “Summer of Superman” tied to the upcoming Superman film directed by James Gunn. Slott’s debut issue, drawn by Rafael Albuquerque, will be available on May 21, and a prelude will be featured in DC’s Free Comic Book Day programming on May 3. Slott expressed his excitement for the opportunity to tell stories about the “first and greatest superhero of all-time,” while the comic’s premise promises a thrilling new challenge for Superman as a Kryptonite asteroid wreaks havoc on Earth. Dan Slott, the acclaimed writer who has long been associated with Spider-Man stories at Marvel Comics, is making a significant move across the street to DC. Having been exclusively signed to Marvel since the late 2000s, Slott is now set to make his debut at DC with a new monthly comic titled Superman Unlimited. The series will be illustrated by Rafael Albuquerque, the talented artist and co-creator of the award-winning horror comic American Vampire. DC made the announcement on Thursday as part of their company-wide initiative called “Summer of Superman,” which coincides with the release of James Gunn’s Superman film on July 26.

The first issue of Superman Unlimited is scheduled to hit local comic book shops and online retailers on May 21. Prior to the launch, fans can look forward to a 10-page prelude written by Slott and illustrated by Albuquerque in DC All In 2025 FCBD Special Edition No. 1 on May 3, which is part of DC’s Free Comic Book Day programming.

As a longtime fan of the Man of Steel, Slott expressed his excitement about finally getting the opportunity to tell stories about Superman. He stated, “He’s the first and the greatest superhero of all-time, and I’ve been waiting my whole life to tell stories about him. Not just because of all the amazing powers he has, but because of who he is inside.”

The comic will kick off with a thrilling premise: Earth is bombarded with a Kryptonite asteroid, altering the balance of power and posing a significant threat to Superman and the world. To adapt and survive, Superman will need to form new alliances, utilize new technology, and develop new tactics in his ongoing quest for truth and justice.

Described as capturing the essence of Superman’s high-flying adventures, Superman Unlimited will introduce a massive new deposit of Kryptonite, leading to unparalleled dangers in Metropolis and beyond. Paul Kaminski, DC group editor, highlighted the impact of this storyline, stating, “Imagine a world where Superman is stopping a bank robbery, but every weapon is packed with Kryptonite ammunition and every petty criminal carries a Kryptonite shiv. This is a world of unlimited danger on a level that Superman, and DC’s Superman family of characters, has never faced before.”

Prior to his move to DC, Slott achieved significant success at Marvel, where he authored titles such as Amazing Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, Silver Surfer, She-Hulk, Mighty Avengers, and Superior Spider-Man. His Spider-Man storylines, which included Spidey temporarily switching bodies with Doctor Octopus and battling a Carnage-Green Goblin hybrid, were not without controversy among fans but nonetheless resonated with readers and achieved impressive sales throughout the 2010s. Some of Slott’s ideas even had an impact on the critically acclaimed Sony Animation film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
