The previous attempt to evolve the formula with Dynasty Warriors 9 was a misstep, however, with its lifeless open world. The new game adapts the 14th-century novel, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, covering the period from 184 AD to 280 AD and focusing on early events, which should make it more accessible to newcomers. Despite having fewer playable characters than the previous game, its engaging combat styles and inclusion of modern action games elements might appeal to long-time fans.

Origins concentrates chiefly on the novel’s initial chapters, charting the Yellow Turban Rebellion and ending with the Battle of Chibi. Additionally, the storytelling shifts to an amnesiac warrior’s viewpoint, a clear nod to new players unfamiliar with the enduring saga. The focus on an earlier timeline facilitates deeper character development and storytelling. However, the narrative’s flow is occasionally marred by an overabundance of cutscenes.

Returning players won’t feel left out. The unique combination of hack and slash action, coupled with an informed take on the Three Kingdoms’ period, creates a rich and fulfilling gaming experience. While the number of playable characters is reduced, they’re replaced with a bevy of companions that can be controlled for a fleeting yet impactful time.

On the battlefield, the game retains the feel of a legitimate Dynasty Warriors experience, only on a much larger scale. You’ll find yourself in epic duels amidst fiery chaos, providing moments of cinematic brilliance. Despite some monotony in the mission design and moment-to-moment action, the tighter controls and flashy combat create a satisfying feel, making each kill feel as gratifying as the last.

The various weapon types and Tactics, such as commanding volleys of arrows and cavalry charges, add depth to the gameplay. You’ll also face off against named enemy officers who are tougher than the average soldier. These fights require precise timing and strategic use of your skills. The varied combat styles blend excellently, crafting an enjoyable and active gaming experience that stands out from a typical power fantasy.

On the flipside, Origins’ secondary story revolving around an amnesiac hero is rather cliche and predictable. Despite its narrative shortcomings and the absence of co-op play, once you’re in the heart of battle, the game’s flaws become less noticeable. In these heated moments, the sight of dozens of enemies flying helplessly through the air is incomparable.

Overall, Dynasty Warriors: Origins successfully pushes the reset button on the series post the disappointing Dynasty Warriors 9. The game combines modern technology with a fresh action-oriented approach, enhancing the essential hack and slash combat. While the limited roster and obtrusive cutscenes might put off some players, the captivating battles make up for these flaws.
