The highly anticipated Star Wars project featuring Ryan Gosling and directed by Shawn Levy now has an official name and release date. The movie, called Star Wars: Starfighter, will be in theaters from May 28, 2027, three weeks after another big-budget Disney movie, Avengers: Secret Wars, which releases on May 7, 2027.

The announcement was made in Tokyo, Japan at the biennial Star Wars Celebration event, a grand celebration of everything related to Star Wars, from Jedi to Siths and much more from the far, far away galaxy. At this stage, the link between Star Wars: Starfighter and the popular 2001 computer game of the same name is unconfirmed.

At the announcement, Gosling expressed his thoughts, “The script is exceptionally good. It’s a fantastic story consisting of genuine and original characters,” shared Gosling. “The film is full of heart and adventure, and there’s no better fit as a filmmaker for such a story than Shawn.”

A picture of Ryan Gosling’s childhood Star Wars bedsheets was displayed on the stage, sent by his mother. Gosling humorously said, “I suspect that she just wants to justify years of hoarding.” He further added, “The picture proves that Star Wars played a part in shaping my concept of a movie, even before I watched the film.”

Shawn Levy has been nurturing this Star Wars feature project since 2022, in collaboration with scriptwriter Jonathan Tropper. The duo has previously worked together on movies like This Is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project.

While plot details are still under wraps, the movie is generating buzz in Hollywood casting circles. There are ongoing casting calls for a teen actor to play opposite Gosling and for a pair of villains.

Star Wars: Starfighter will take the audience on a standalone journey disconnected from the Skywalker Saga, which focuses on the iconic characters Luke Skywalker and his father Anakin. The narrative of Starfighter is set five years after 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Clarifying that it’s neither a prequel nor a sequel, director Levy shared, “This is a new adventure, set in a time period that we haven’t seen explored in the galaxy yet.” Production for the movie is slated to begin this fall.

The Levy-Gosling Star Wars project is the second feature to be produced post-Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The movie’s reception led to a review of the Star Wars movie plans. The first film in this line-up is The Mandalorian and Grogu, a movie spinoff from the hit Disney+ series The Mandalorian. The film, currently in post-production, is set to be released on May 22, 2026.
