Minecraft has far exceeded box office forecasts, and it could be a game-changer for Roblox, another popular multiplayer block-building game, which may attract calls from Hollywood. Minecraft and Roblox often go head-to-head when it comes to audiences aged six to 13, so given that Minecraft has struck gold at the box office, a big-screen Roblox adaptation seems inevitable.

“Minecraft” Movie Success Spurs Speculation of Roblox Hollywood Debut

– “A Minecraft Movie” has significantly outperformed expectations at the box office, in just six days grossing over $185 million domestically, leading to speculation that a Roblox adaptation could be on the cards.
– While Roblox has already made some adaptations of creator IP on its platform, it has not ventured into the feature film space; a spokesperson for the company stated they have no plans to share at this time regarding future use of its IP.
– Despite recent turbulence in the stock market due to threatened Trump tariffs, Roblox made $3.6 billion in revenue in 2024 as a free-to-play game.

Minecraft has smashed box office projections, prompting with Hollywood insiders to suggest Roblox, a game that resonates with a similar demographic, consider a potential big screen adaptation. Minecraft and Roblox, although different in their gameplay aspects, both appeal to children aged six to 13, and share a theme of creative building and exploration.

The Minecraft movie nostalgic for many, as the average player is 24, has earned over $185 million domestically in its first six days, outperforming other recent video-game movie adaptations, such as The Super Mario Bros Movie. The blockbuster performance indicates a win for Warner Bros, Legendary and Microsoft, the owner of Minecraft through its $2.5 billion purchase of Mojang Studios in 2014.

Interestingly, Roblox, unlike Minecraft, is a publicly-traded company that owns its IP. Surely, they would want to capitalize on the success of the Minecraft movie. A spokesperson for Roblox, however, stated that the company has no plans to share at this stage about harnessing their IP in the future, indicating that producing a blockbuster Hollywood film may not be as simple as it sounds. Despite this, they also said the company would welcome a movie based on popular platform games such as Dress to Impress or Adopt Me.

Although Roblox has begun exploring adaptation space with their platform creator IP, it’s not yet on par with what Minecraft has achieved. For instance, the character “Piggy” from Roblox creator MiniToon has inspired a book series, and various Roblox games have episodic series in the making.

As for Roblox shareholders, the success of the Minecraft film is undoubtedly on their radar, despite some turbulence in the stocks markets lately, thanks to proposed Trump tariffs. However, Roblox made a viewership of $3.6 billion in 2024, with its Daily Active Users peaking at 85 million.

With Minecraft being the best-selling game of all time with 300 million copies sold, and earning money through game sales and purchasable enhancements, a spokesperson refused to shed light on Microsoft’s financial ties with Warner Bros./Legendary on the Minecraft movie but stated they were pleased with the reception of the film.

Whether a Roblox movie will beat the sequel of the Minecraft Movie to the big screen remains in the realm of speculation. Even though instant greenlighting is unlikely, development and production will take time, and in the world of entertainment, time is of the essence. After all, successful movies inspire other adaptations, as seen with the Barbie movie, and a raft of upcoming film adaptations based on popular toy lines. Therefore, it may be time for Roblox to spring into action.
