Blue Prince Review: An Intricate Roguelike Puzzle Adventure

Blue Prince is a roguelike game with puzzling aspects based around exploring a continually transforming mansion – the Mount Holly estate. Inheriting the house necessitates reaching the elusive Room 46. However, you can’t reside in the mansion overnight. Instead, you must camp outside, and each morning, you notice the mansion’s layout has changed. Being a first-person game, you experience the mansion as a live-in puzzle box.

Each step depletes your step inventory, making the task trickier.

The game’s complexity increases as you realize rooms have special properties. Some rooms, like the Parlor or Billiard Room, hold puzzles yielding rewards. Others, like the Security Room, provide essential information about items in the house. Rooms are color-coded, dictating their purpose – green rooms are gardens, orange are hallways, and the list goes on. Discovering how rooms impact each other reveals another layer of the game’s complex design.

Your exploration leads you to Keys and Gems, which are integral for unlocking rooms and generating special rooms. Throughout the mansion, coins are purchased in shop rooms, and re-roll tokens offer other options. Discovering persistence – Observatory rewards or daily coin allowances – or equipment like Metal Detectors or Shovels adds another layer to the game.

Although Blue Prince’s nature can sometimes make it frustrating, the game always provides some form of progress. The cryptic clues in certain rooms help solve puzzles elsewhere. Knowledge becomes a tool within the game, requiring the player to keep a physical notebook of their findings. Amidst the puzzles, you also uncover the story of the manor’s former residents, adding to the game’s mystery.

Then comes Blue Prince’s ultimate magic. The constantly changing house, with its abundant solutions, transforms into a rigid puzzle with certain solutions. This unusual transformation is central to the game’s design and beauty. Blue Prince trains you to use the mansion itself as a key to the puzzling challenges.
