Sony is gearing up to release its eagerly-anticipated movie, The Legend of Zelda. The film, which is a live-action adaptation of the famous video game, is slated to hit theaters on March 26, 2027. This project is under the direction of Wes Ball, renowned for directing the popular movie Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes in the previous year. So far, the studio has been tight-lipped about the storyline and cast details.

The story of the film is based on Nintendo’s popular video game franchise, The Legend of Zelda, which was launched in 1986. The captivating game encapsulates a fantasy world where a young Hero named Link and Princess Zelda strive to vanquish the enigmatic villain Ganon to safeguard their kingdom, Hyrule.

Sony is responsible for the film’s distribution as it originates from Nintendo and Avi Arad’s Arad Productions, Inc. Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo’s representative director, is co-producing the movie with Arad.

The announcement of The Legend of Zelda live-action movie was made back in November 2023. Shigeru Miyamoto expressed to the public that he had immersed himself in developing the adapted film. He spoke of his excitement about the official commencement of the film’s development and assured fans that Nintendo is heavily involved in the production stages. Although he noted that completing the film would take time, he expressed hope that the end result will be worth the wait.

Nintendo has a strong reputation for retaining control over their titles, making Zelda a treasured commodity. The previous adaptation of a Nintendo production was Universal’s 2023 blockbuster, The Super Mario Bros. Movie. This successful film, starring Chris Pratt and Anya Taylor-Joy, grossed an impressive .3 billion globally since its release. The Super Mario Bros. Movie was the first film adaptation of a Nintendo property since the 1993 version featuring Bob Hoskins as Mario and John Leguizamo as Luigi.

Wes Ball, the film’s director, has an impressive track record. Before directing Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, he directed the Maze Runner trilogy.
