– Sony Pictures has removed the Legendary’s Street Fighter film from its release calendar; it was previously slated for March 20, 2026.
– Tommy Wirkola’s shark thriller Shiver, starring Phoebe Dynevor, has been re-scheduled to release on July 3, 2026, after previously being slated for August 1, 2025.
– The removal of the Street Fighter film follows the end of Sony and Legendary’s distribution pact, despite the growing Hollywood trend for successful video game adaptations.

Sony Pictures has recently changed course and decided to pull the forthcoming Street Fighter film from its slated March 20, 2026 release. This film, based on the ultra-popular video game series and co-produced with Capcom, has surprisingly not yet disclosed its acting lineup.

News surfaced last month via The Hollywood Reporter declaring that Kitao Sakurai, celebrated for directing Netflix’s 2021 comedy, Bad Trip (starring Eric André), was appointed to handle the video game film adaptation. The prior proposed project had directors Danny and Michael Philippou, known for Talk to Me, on board. The distribution partnership between Sony and Legendary’s terminated last year.

In other news, the new shark thriller from director Tommy Wirkola, starring Phoebe Dynevor, has changed its name to Shiver from its previous title, Beneath the Storm. This Sony production has a new release date of July 3, 2026, stepping back from the originally intended August 1, 2025 launch for a more seasonally fitting mid-summer introduction.

Whitney Peak and Djimon Hounsou are the accompanying stars in Shiver, with Adam McKay and Kevin Messick fulfilling producers’ obligations. This movie will vie for audiences against Universal’s Minions 3, also debuting over the Fourth of July weekend in 2026.

The Street Fighter saga started in 1987 with the introduction of an electronic arcade martial arts game, which was then followed by the extremely successful Street Fighter II in 1991. A similarly titled big-screen rendition came out in 1994, featuring Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Raúl Juliá portraying M. Bison, and Ming-Na Wen as the character Chun-Li. Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li was then published by 20th Century Fox in 2009.

Cinema industry has recognized the potential profitability of video game film adaptations post the triumphs of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Warner Bros. fans are eagerly waiting for the upcoming A Minecraft Movie, which is set to premier next month, expected to attract a large audience.
