– The film is being produced by Constantin Film, Vertigo Entertainment, PlayStation Productions and Sony’s Columbia Pictures, aiming for a summer shoot in Europe.

Austin Abrams, known for his role in Euphoria, has been selected to play the lead role in the revived horror action film, Resident Evil. The reboot project is a collaboration between Sony Pictures and Zach Cregger.

Cregger, celebrated for his significant contributions to the modern horror genre through his hit film, Barbarian, has been entrusted with the scripting and direction of the Resident Evil remake.

Abrams will join an ensemble cast for Cregger’s latest horror project, Weapons, a sequel to Barbarian. “Weapons” also features well-known names such as Josh Brolin and Julia Garner. If finalized, Resident Evil could reunite Cregger and Abrams.

Sony Pictures is expediting the making of Resident Evil, setting plans for filming in Europe. There are rumors that Cregger has already begun searching for suitable shooting locations.

Resident Evil’s production and co-financing is being managed by Constantin Film. Other co-producers include Robert Kulzer of Constantin, Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment (also involved in Barbarian) and Miri Yoon who worked on Weapons. PlayStation productions are also partnering in the production efforts.

The previous Resident Evil films, inspired by Capcom video games, were staged around a woman combating zombies and the notorious Umbrella Corporation. This biowarfare company is portrayed as the evil entity that unleashed the living dead.

Sources close to the project say this latest Resident Evil version is heavily leaning towards the horror genre. It is also expected to feature nuances of a wilderness survival thriller. The script is co-written by Shay Hatten, key contributor to John Wick: Chapter 4 and Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead.

Sony Pictures refrained from commenting on the development. Nicole Brown has been given the responsibility to oversee the project for Sony’s Columbia Pictures.

Abrams, a steadily rising actor, was recently seen acting in the Apple TV action-comedy, Wolfs, which also starred George Clooney and Brad Pitt. He began acting at a young age of 11 and has been a part of popular series like The Walking Dead and This Is Us. His other credits on the film front include Scary Stories We Tell in the Dark, YA romance Chemical Hearts by Amazon and black comedy Do Revenge on Netflix.
