A first glimpse into an authorized four-part documentary delving into the life and work of renowned filmmaker, Tim Burton has been revealed. The series, directed by Tara Wood, features interviews with top-tier actors from Burton’s extensive film roster, including Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, Helena Bonham Carter, and Michael Keaton, among others. Unpublished artworks, a never-before-seen stop-motion short film, and insights into Burton’s life through his unique filmography make this a must-see for fans and film enthusiasts.

– The first part of a four-part documentary about the life and work of director Tim Burton has been unveiled, marking the first time Burton has supported such a project.
– The doc features interviews with Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, and Helena Bonham Carter, among others, and includes exclusive material such as unpublished art and a never-before-seen stop-motion short film.
– The first part of the series already screened at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival, where it was noted for providing a deeply personal look into Burton’s inspirations, struggles, and cinematic history.


Directed by Tara Wood, known for her work on (21 Years: Richard Linklater), the documentary features interviews and commentary from many high-profile actors who have starred in Burton’s movies.

Among these stars are regular Burton collaborator Johnny Depp (Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Alice in Wonderland), Winona Ryder (Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice and its sequel), Helena Bonham Carter (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Sweeney Todd, and also Burton’s former partner), and Michael Keaton (Batman, Batman Returns).

The documentary also features contributions from frequent Burton film music composer Danny Elfman.

Expressing her admiration for Burton’s creative process, Ryder shares, “I would love to take a trip inside his brain — this kingdom where these characters live.”

Depp echoes his appreciation for Burton’s unique artistic vision, noting, “He’s an auteur, he’s a visionary, he’s an artist with images and thoughts. He’s got a lot going on in there. Tim is the real thing.”

The series still lacks a title but is notable as “the first time the famed director has endorsed a project about his work which includes exclusive interviews, unseen arts and a never-seen-before stop-motion short film,” according to a released statement.

The first segment of the series has already been presented at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival.

Wood admires how Burton narrates his life story through his films, saying, “The documentary takes us on a genuinely inspiring journey through decades of cinematic history, brimming with profound personal insights, passions, and challenges.”

The documentary is produced by Wood, Joe Clarke, and Jake Zortman. The executive producers are Allen Gilmer, Riki Rushing, Berge Garabedian, Robert C. McGirr, and Lorraine Lamb.
