John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the creative minds behind Dungeons & Dragons, are making a move to Park Ave by signing a deal to pen a film adaptation of the board game, Monopoly. This project is set to be overseen by Lionsgate, and is to be produced in collaboration with Barbie company LuckyChap and Hasbro Entertainment.
Monopoly, originating from 1935, invites its players to purchase properties and construct residences and establishments. The ultimate goal of the game is to financially outweigh the opposing players, while dodging potential bankruptcy and the infamous “go directly to jail” card. This widely-loved board game was initially created to advocate against wealth monopolization and its negative influence on economic health. Since its conception, nearly 1 billion copies of the game have been sold globally, sparking countless fiery family debates at the game table.
Previous attempts at launching a film based on Monopoly had Lionsgate introducing Kevin Hart as the star, and Tim Story as the director. However, Lionsgate’s rights to Monopoly were only extended after the acquisition of Hasbro’s film and TV arm, eOne.
Previously, both Daley and Goldstein have shown their proficiency in translating Hasbro’s board games into visual narratives. This is evident in their successful collaboration in Paramount’s 2023’s hit Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves, which reached impressive heights.
Represented by CAA, Fourth Wall Management, and Hansen Jacobson, these two creatives are renowned for their directorial artwork in Game Night, a popular action comedy featuring Rachel McAdams and Jason Bateman. More recently, they’ve written and directed Apple’s anticipated action-adventure film, Mayday, starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh.
