Hasbro Entertainment is preparing a universe inspired by its renowned card game, Magic: The Gathering. The toy magnate is joining forces with Legendary Entertainment to craft a shared Magic: The Gathering universe, proclaimed to traverse both the cinema and television platforms. The initial task involves transforming the game into a film.

The firm Wizards of the Coast released Magic: The Gathering in 1993, establishing it as the inaugural trading card game worldwide. Its popularity swiftly grew global, becoming a common feature in 90’s schoolyards and igniting themed conventions. After acquiring Wizards of the Coast in 1999, Hasbro claims the game has engaged 50 million players, attributed to its captivating characters, imaginative worlds, and the complex strategy it demands.

“We deem ourselves careful guardians of unique and cherished intellectual property (IP), and Magic: The Gathering perfectly embodies this,” stated Mary Parent, Legendary’s worldwide production chairman. “Along with the phenomenal Hasbro team, we aspire to evolve a multimedia universe that not only excites the loyal fan base, but also attracts a vast wave of newcomers.”

Legendary has previously turned recognizable brands into successful franchises, such as Godzilla vs Kong and Dune, both of which cover film and TV. The company is also responsible for Netflix’s Enola Holmes movies and anticipates producing the Minecraft movie featuring Jason Momoa and backed by Warner Bros.

Meanwhile, Hasbro has already set up a Magic: The Gathering TV show at Netflix, with Star Trek: Picard showrunner Terry Matalas. In contrast, 20th Century Fox attempted to create a film universe a decade ago with producer Simon Kinberg, which never materialized.

According to Hasbro Entertainment head of film, Zev Foreman, “This strategic alliance brings together one of the world’s most eminent brands and a proven and powerful guardian. Magic: The Gathering, with its long history of intricate world building and inspired storytelling, is a picture-perfect fit for Legendary’s distinctive handling of high-profile IP. We are thrilled to collaborate and construct a brand-new Magic: The Gathering universe.”
