Although the cancellation may also be attributed to the allegations against Gaiman, it is clear that the show’s creators intended season 2 to be the final installment.

Netflix’s popular series “The Sandman,” based on Neil Gaiman’s renowned fantasy comic series, is set to conclude after its upcoming second season. While some fans may be disappointed by this news, insiders from Netflix have revealed that the decision to end the show with season 2 was actually planned well in advance.

According to Variety, sources close to “The Sandman” had already indicated that the expensive series, produced by Warner Bros. Television for Netflix, would wrap up after the second season. This insight was provided during the show’s production in the summer of 2023. The announcement of new characters for season 2 in May 2024 further reinforced the notion that the series would be condensing the comics’ storyline sooner than anticipated by fans.

The inclusion of characters like Ruby, who appeared much later in the comic series, took many viewers by surprise. Additionally, the high production costs associated with “The Sandman” may have influenced Netflix’s decision to conclude the show after season 2. Despite strong viewership numbers for the first season, Netflix took two months to officially greenlight the second season.

However, it is worth noting that season 2’s limited timeframe makes it unlikely to cover volumes 4 through 10 comprehensively, considering that season 1 didn’t even finish adapting the first three volumes. This raises questions about whether the cancellation is linked to real-life events involving Neil Gaiman, the series’ creator.

Gaiman faced serious allegations of sexual assault made by five women in a podcast series in July 2024. The allegations took a darker turn in January 2025 when New York Magazine published a detailed account of Gaiman’s alleged acts of violent sexual assault and misconduct. Shockingly, some of these incidents reportedly occurred while his son was present.

It is worth mentioning that cancellations or postponements of projects involving Gaiman are not unprecedented. For instance, Amazon Prime Video’s “Good Omens” season 3 was recently condensed into a single 90-minute movie, with Gaiman no longer involved creatively. Disney also halted production on a movie adaptation of Gaiman’s children’s book, “The Graveyard Book,” in September 2024. Furthermore, a U.K. stage production of “Coraline,” based on Gaiman’s book of the same name, was entirely scrapped due to the allegations against the author.
