Apple TV+ has been making waves with its captivating series “Severance.” Following the success of its first season, the highly anticipated second season has garnered significant attention, aided by attention-grabbing publicity stunts featuring the cast. While “Severance” has undeniably become a talked-about show, the question remains whether it has translated into financial success for Apple TV+.

Although Apple’s streaming platform may not be leading the pack, it has a strong track record of investing in quality content. Unlike many competitors, Apple’s business extends beyond digital content, with extended Apple TV+ trials bundled with new iPhone and iPad purchases, providing additional value to the company. This unique position adds complexity to the evaluation of a show’s “value” on the streaming platform.

According to a recent report by Parrot Analytics, “Severance” season 1 generated over 200 million in revenue using the agency’s Content Valuation methodology. This substantial figure, however, is roughly equivalent to the reported production budget for season 2. Notably, almost half of season 1’s total revenue was earned in the year following the finale, highlighting the series’ powerful word-of-mouth marketing.

Deadline’s report also included Parrot’s estimates for other popular Apple TV+ originals. “The Morning Show” generated 9.4 million over a more extended period, while “Slow Horses” brought in 4.8 million in a timeframe similar to “Severance” season 1. However, the real standout is “Ted Lasso,” which raked in an impressive 9.4 million between 2020 and 2024, making it the most widely embraced Apple TV+ original to date.

Despite “Severance” taking nearly three years between seasons, the show’s popularity may continue to rise. Season 1 surprised viewers with its blend of sci-fi thriller elements and notable comedic talents. Over time, the series has gained traction online, attracting newcomers who are joining for the start of season 2.

While Apple has not officially ordered “Severance” season 3, the production team, including director Ben Stiller, has confirmed that work is already underway. This indicates Apple’s commitment to the series. Additionally, Apple kicked off 2025 with a free weekend of Apple TV+ for all, likely aimed at attracting non-subscribers who have heard great things about “Severance.”

Similar to previous “mystery box” shows like “Lost” and “Manifest,” “Severance” has become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Its captivating writing invites fans to theorize and obsess over every clue, drawing viewers in to be part of the conversation. However, it remains to be seen whether the show can maintain its appeal once its secrets are revealed. Answers can sometimes undermine shows built on mystery. Nonetheless, “Severance” begins its second season with a strong foundation and is proving to be a success for Apple.
