“I’m still struggling to make a living. I’ve been in this business making films now for over two decades with two Oscar nominations, been in many blockbuster films, and yet, I’m still struggling financially. I’m definitely underpaid,” Hounsou confessed to CNN.

This is not the first time Hounsou has voiced his concerns about the financial disparities in the industry. In 2023, he spoke to The Guardian, highlighting the stark contrast between his own situation and that of his more affluent colleagues. “I’ve come up in the business with some people who are absolutely well off and have very little of my accolades. So I feel cheated, tremendously cheated, in terms of finances and in terms of the workload as well,” he shared.

Hounsou, who hails from Benin and is of black descent, also shed light on the challenges he faces due to racism and xenophobia in his career. He revealed instances where he felt prejudiced against, recounting experiences at studios where he was met with ignorance and limited perception. “I’ve gone to studios for meetings and they’re like, ‘Wow, we felt like you just got off the boat and then went back [after Amistad]. We didn’t know you were here as a true actor,'” he shared. Such attitudes restrict opportunities and hinder his progress within the industry. Nonetheless, Hounsou remains determined to challenge these misconceptions and defy stereotypes.

Despite the financial struggles he confronts, Hounsou continues to make his mark in the entertainment world. His recent projects include appearances in A Quiet Place: Day One, Netflix’s Rebel Moon films, the highly anticipated Gran Turismo video game adaptation, The King’s Man, Shazam: Fury of the Gods, Captain Marvel, Fast and Furious 7, and many more.
