The trailer for Joshua John Miller’s latest take on the demon extraction genre, “The Exorcism,” was unveiled. It gives audiences a first look at the highly anticipated film, which stars Oscar winner Russell Crowe as a troubled actor unraveling while filming a supernatural horror movie. The Exorcism is set to hit theaters on June 7.
In the film, Crowe plays Anthony Miller, a troubled actor who begins to unravel on set while shooting a supernatural horror film. Alongside him is Ryan Simpkins, who portrays his estranged daughter, concerned about her father’s troubling behavior which she suspects may be linked to something more sinister than a relapse into addiction issues. It’s not the first time Crowe has dealt with the devil, last dancing in the wonderful The Pope’s Exorcist.
The supporting cast includes Sam Worthington, Chloe Bailey, Adam Goldberg, and David Hyde Pierce, all contributing to the chilling and suspenseful narrative. Miller co-wrote the film with M.A. Fortin, marking their second collaboration together after their work on “Queen of The South” and “The Final Girls”.
The inspiration for “The Exorcism” came from Miller’s childhood memories of watching his father, Jason Miller, playing Father Karras in “The Exorcist.” The eerie stories of strange occurrences and cursed happenings on the set of the iconic film fueled Miller’s fascination with the idea of cursed movies, leading him to craft a modern and updated take on the possession genre.
According to Miller, “The Exorcism” aims to subvert traditional possession movie tropes by exploring themes of vulnerability and darkness that can affect anyone, regardless of gender or background. The film delves into the idea that confronting one’s demons is essential to overcoming darkness and finding redemption.
