Sylvester Stallone to Reprise Role in ‘Cliffhanger’ Reboot Directed by Ric Roman Waugh
Sylvester Stallone is preparing to make a comeback in the action-thriller genre with a reboot of his 1993 film, “Cliffhanger.” The movie will be directed by Ric Roman Waugh, who has previously directed movies like “Angel Has Fallen” and “Greenland.” Stallone will reprise his role as mountain climber and rescue ranger, Gabe Walker, in the upcoming feature. The script has been written by Mark Bianculli, who was a writer-consulting producer for the Amazon series “Hunters.” Originally, Ana Lily Amirpour was to direct a female-led reboot but that seems to have gone by the wayside.
The reboot will be produced by Neal H. Moritz’s Original Film, known for producing the multi-billion-dollar franchise, “The Fast and the Furious,” and Stallone and Braden Aftergood’s Balboa Productions. Interestingly, the original trailer for “Cliffhanger” revealed almost the entire plot of the movie, making it possible to plot out the entire movie based on just the trailer. The 1993 movie was directed by Renny Harlin and despite its success, it almost bankrupted the lead production company, Carolco!
Waugh, who is a fan of the original “Cliffhanger,” expressed his excitement for the upcoming project in a statement, saying, “To be at the helm of the next chapter, scaling the Italian Alps with the legend himself, Sylvester Stallone, is a dream come true. It’s going to be a great challenge and blast taking this franchise to new heights, a responsibility I don’t take lightly.” Other executive producers for the reboot include Ana Lily Amirpour, Chance Wright, Gianluca Chakra, and Hisham Alghanim.
