New Star Wars Movie To Feature Daisy Ridley’s Return as Rey Skywalker
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy announced at Star Wars Celebration in London that a new Star Wars film is in the works, featuring Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker as the lead character. The movie will be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (“Ms. Marvel”), with a script by Steven Knight (“Peaky Blinders”). The film will reportedly follow the events of “The Rise of Skywalker”, taking place over 15 years later as Rey as establishes a new Jedi Order.
However, the journey to get to this point has been a bumpy one. Damon Lindelof (“Watchmen”) and Justin Britt-Gibson (“Counterpart”) were originally hired to write the script, but they both left the project in February, leaving the film’s future uncertain. Steven Knight stepped in to write the film, but with high-profile creatives leaving a “Star Wars” feature project years after their involvement was first reported, it’s not a sure thing until production officially starts. Or that it will end up being good.
Despite the setbacks, the new Star Wars film featuring Rey Skywalker has the potential to be a major milestone for the franchise. Obaid-Chinoy is an interesting choice, as she has only directed documentaries, alongside two episodes of the less-than-stellar “Ms. Marvel.” I’d love to be more excited about this but like with anything Star Wars these days, it’s better to wait and see!
