PlayStation VR 2 Review: The Next Generation of Virtual Reality

Share

Virtual reality has been a buzzword for quite some time, and technology has made incredible strides in recent years. Sony’s PlayStation VR (PSVR) was one of the early pioneers of modern VR, and it has undergone a major upgrade with the release of the PlayStation VR 2. The PSVR 2 is a new, high-end virtual reality headset designed for the PlayStation 5. It features a 4K OLED screen, built-in tracking cameras, eye tracking, and two advanced Sense controllers with adaptive triggers and haptic feedback.

The PS VR2 is an improvement over its predecessor in every way, with a similar black-and-white design and an adjustable head strap that makes it comfortable for users with different head shapes. It also features a slider to adjust the interpupillary distance and passthrough mode, which allows users to see the real world without removing the headset. The headset’s display uses two HDR-enabled OLED panels that operate at up to 120 Hz and offer a 110-degree field of view, making it one of the best headsets on the market regarding picture quality and display.

PSVR 2 significantly improves over the original PSVR in several ways, including hardware, comfort, and performance. Here are some of the main improvements that make the PSVR 2 worth considering:

  1. Higher resolution display: The PSVR 2 boasts a resolution of 2000 x 2040 pixels per eye, which is a significant improvement over the 960 x 1080 pixels per eye of the original PSVR. This means that games and experiences will be sharper and clearer, with less pixelation and a more immersive visual experience.
  2. New controller design: The PSVR 2 has new, more advanced controllers that feature improved haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and finger touch detection. This will provide a more intuitive and immersive gaming experience that responds to the player’s movements more naturally.
  3. Better tracking: The PSVR 2 uses a new inside-out tracking system that eliminates the need for external cameras or sensors. This means that setup is much easier, and players have more freedom of movement in virtual spaces.
  4. Improved comfort: The PSVR 2 features a redesigned head-mounted display that is more comfortable to wear for longer periods. The device is also lighter and more balanced, with a quick-release button that makes it easy to put on and take off.
  5. Compatibility with PS5: The PSVR 2 is designed to work with the PS5, meaning players can use the console’s more powerful hardware to run games and experiences at higher frame rates and with more advanced visual effects.

While the PSVR 2 headset is an impressive piece of hardware, the available games are a critical part of any VR experience. The good news is some of the newest games are already phenomenal accomplishments. The top titles we can recommend include Horizon: Call of the Mountain, which is set in the world of Horizon Zero Dawn, and Forbidden West, the first-person VR remake of Resident Evil 4, the sequel to The Climb, which includes new controls and updated graphics, Gran Turismo 7 for racing fans, and a big standout for us, Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge which looks fantastic in its new form!

Overall, while the available game library for the PSVR 2 is not yet as extensive as that of some other VR systems, the PS VR2 is still a highly recommended virtual reality headset for those who own a PlayStation 5 and are interested in VR gaming. Its advanced features, excellent picture quality, and ease of use make it one of the best VR headsets available, despite a relatively small library of games.

I’ve got one myself and it’s a game changer, truly feels like you’re in a different world. Only downside is the motion sickness I get sometimes, but overall a great product.
