Katzenberg Should Practice What He Preached
In late January 1991 Jeffrey Katzenberg, then head of production at Disney, wrote a scalding 28-page memo blasting the movie industry’s “tidal wave of runaway costs and mindless competition.†Today, his Dreamworks Animation tentpoles manage to pack ’em in but lack everything that classic animated storytelling should have. Perhaps now, more than ever, the ol’ Katz should revisit his words from a time when he actually seemed to care about things such as magic.
