September 5th is a good day
Godzilla is back! On September 5, Classic Media will release the complete, uncut, Japanese original, Gojira (Godzilla), on DVD for the first time ever in North America. From legendary Japanese filmmaker Ishiro Honda, Gojira quickly became a monster classic. Gojira will only be available as part of a special DVD 2-pack that also includes the re-edited US version, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, starring Raymond Burr. The Gojira/Godzilla: King of the Monsters DVD 2-pack stomps onto retail shelves late summer for $21.98 SRP.
This is definitely worth getting. It is almost a completely different movie without the Raymond Burr nonsense, and the dilemma of the characters in their quest to stop Godzilla is much clearer. It’s up to you whether or not the movie has a happy ending.
All I can say is that I hope this is the beginning of a trend—does it have commentary of any kind? As it is, I have about 200 hours of translation work for Sean’s new Japanese girlfriend…
Amazon lists this as having commentary (it’s been preordered, despite it being so close to my birthday that I shouldn’t be buying anything round that time, sorry christa) — but it does not say who the commentary is from. I presume it’s from a film historian and hopefully from any living producers.
